Rd 9 - We don't want to be 4 & 7....

Round 9 - Essendon VS Richmond
Eithad

Saturday 30th May 2015

We don’t want to be 4-7….

It was a hard few days to stomach after the loss against the Tigers, a game that if we had of kicked straight early could have blown the game apart. Our defensive play is still one of the best in the competition.
We were very good again in this area and our effort is always there. More disposals, more tackles, more clearances……

But to kick 1.4 in the first quarter; all in front with 2 out on the full on top of this was disappointing, then to go 1.8 before kicking our second made it hard work.

As Hirdy said to make the amount of mistakes we did doesn’t help us & letting ourselves down with our ‘ball movement’ when under pressure. Not kicking when we should – all hurt the end result. Our supporters watching the game would have seen some fairly ‘basic errors’ committed by our players.
The good news is that these shortcomings are all fixable. Improving the level of execution will be a focus over the next two or three weeks. If we can lift our standards in that area and maintain the excellence we have exhibited in the defensive side of our game, we will become a very difficult side to beat.

If we use the ball better – anything really is possible.
It is our home game this week, a big one, almost a must win….we don’t want to be 4-7 at the bye it would mean we would need to wine 8-9 of our last 12 to make the 8. It’s a big game against Geelong a side we haven’t beaten in a long time.

With Jobe & Fletch out this week it opens the door for some younger players to come in. Then we await Zacha, Myers, Hocking & Winderlich all to come back in over the next month.

I encourage all supporters to get along to the game. One of footy’s great traditions - the curtain raiser - will be restored this week. So if you are able to get there early you can catch the Essendon VFL side in action as they face their Geelong counterparts.

See you at the footy...
